Finding Job Openings

Two kinds of job opening; advertised and those that are not.

1. Advertised Openings

Most companies advertise first on their websites. Check the opportunities or job page on the websites regularly. Can use job search websites such as monster.ca, find-a-job-canada.com, bcjobs.ca, wowjobs.ca, indeedjobs.com, eluta.ca, Craigslist and so on. When you find a job in which you are interested, submit a résumé and applicatino letter and wait for a response.

2. Unadvertised Job Openings

Most positions are filed either by word of mouth or more often through an existing pool of qualified job application packages kept on file. When you find companies where you might like to work, write them an unsolicited application.

Social Media and the Job Hunt

Use Facebook and LinkedIn to make contacts and post queries about job openings. LinkedIn is a good way to network and establish contacts with professionals in your field. Continually keep your LinkedIn profile updated much like you would your résumé . By describing projects on which you are working and listing projects you have completed successfully.

Information Interviews

An information job interciew ia s conversation between you and a more knowledgeable, experienced preson in your field to get information from that person. Another important reason for participating in these sorts of professional interactions, thogh never mentined during the intervie, is to build contacts in the industry. When you send those fiems your unsolicited applications, mention the interviewee's name. Your prospective employer will probably call the intervieww, so dropping his or her name functions as a sort of reference. Be sure to ask the interviewee if it would be okay to mention them. After the information interview, send a polite thank-you note or email.
